GPC said Dach won ATHENA Businesswoman of the Year in the private sector because during her nearly 20 years at Changing Hands Bookstore, she not only set a national standard for successfully operating the 鈥渁rt of being an independent bookstore鈥 but also transformed the business by curating an elite speaker series, fostering community connections and increasing annual sales by $5 million.

Dach also established diverse and innovative revenue streams for her business by 鈥渂reathing life鈥 into the arts and culture scene of Phoenix as an instrumental player in the creation of Roosevelt Row.

Dach said her advice to women just starting their career is: “Be humble and confident. Listen. And be fearless.鈥

Sherri Collins

She also serves as the President of the Board for the National Association of State Agencies of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing. She recognizes herself as the first and only deaf lobbyist in the country, and has championed regulatory changes to improve the lives of individuals who are deaf or hard of hearing.

鈥淭he ATHENA Award is a special recognition. And, I鈥檓 so honored to have been selected as a candidate. I am just humbled to have been considered for this award. 鈥淎s I walk away from this stage, I hope that you remember my story鈥攖hat you remember the聽contributions, creativity and humanity of all immigrants,鈥 Montoya said. 鈥淚 hope that you remember that we have a choice to nurture, to serve, and to lead with love in so much darkness. You have a voice to be a light.鈥

Grand Canyon University hosted its inaugural Colangelo Servant Leadership Awards breakfast Tuesday, in partnership with Freeport-McMoRan, honoring four community members for outstanding service, leadership and entrepreneurism.

Named after Jerry Colangelo, a prominent businessman and philanthropist in the state, the awards celebrated the ideals that Colangelo has practiced throughout his career. As the owner of the and, Colangelo helped build two of the state鈥檚 most popular franchises to a combined valuation of almost $2.8 billion.聽

鈥淲e want to highlight business and elevate humanity through servant leadership, which is the most important tenet of the four tenets of conscious capitalism,鈥 said Randy Gibb, dean of GCU鈥檚 Colangelo College of Business. 鈥淢r. Colangelo embodies what it means to be a servant leader: service before self, humility, stewardship, and love and care for your team. And our four recipients today also embody all those traits.鈥

GCU President Brian Mueller emphasized the importance of highlighting the countless Arizona residents that create new jobs and opportunities. He said awards like this help recognize exceptional leaders and their daily efforts to improve Arizona and provide 鈥渘ew prosperity.鈥

These are the 2019 Colangelo Servant Leadership Award recipients:

  • David Kimmerle, CEO of Sanderson Ford car dealership
  • Linda Little, president of iHeartMedia Phoenix
  • Mike Ingram, founder of land and development business El Dorado Holdings, Inc.
  • Sandra Watson, president and CEO of the Arizona Commerce Authority

鈥淭o me, that [award] is at my core in terms of who I am,鈥 Little told 番茄社区 after the ceremony. 鈥淭hat means more than achieving huge financial success because it鈥檚 all about how you can serve others and lead. I鈥檝e always been a collaborator, I鈥檝e never been the kind of leader that gets in the front of the room and says, 鈥業t鈥檚 my way or the highway.鈥 I鈥檝e always been that person that says, 鈥楬ey, I have a good idea, but if you had a better one, let鈥檚 do that.鈥 I love one-on-one coaching; I love understanding what somebody wants to do.鈥

Watson explained that leadership is about the effort of many to advance a common goal. She cited state leaders in their efforts to grow Arizona鈥檚 economy, including Gov. Doug Ducey, GCU鈥檚 Mueller and Watson鈥檚 own team at the Arizona Commerce Authority.

鈥淪ervant leadership is about the efforts of many to advance a common goal,鈥 Watson said. 鈥淚n addition to Jerry, I鈥檝e had the great privilege of working with so many servant leaders to make Arizona the best place to live and do business鈥 job creation, salaries and capital investment are on the rise, and we continue to advance our state鈥檚 competitive global position.鈥

Mueller also highlighted the importance of a free market system in Arizona, including its role in shaping GCU and its surrounding neighborhood. Because of public markets and their willingness to invest, he noted, GCU has created over 11,000 jobs, both on campus and through new businesses. Additionally, home values in the neighborhood have jumped by roughly 302 percent in the past five years.聽

鈥淭he economy鈥檚 on fire 鈥 the things that Gov. Ducey has done, the Arizona Commerce Authority, with their leadership,鈥 Mueller told 番茄社区 after the ceremony. 鈥淏ut we have trouble getting the news out, so this was one attempt to say, 鈥楲et鈥檚 talk about the great things that are happening; let鈥檚 talk about the great people that are making those things happen, and let鈥檚 put Arizona out as one of the best places to live鈥 鈥 because it is! 鈥 and not just because of our weather, but because of what鈥檚 going on in the state.鈥

The Arizona Small Business Association hosted its 26th Annual Enterprise Business Awards Luncheon in Scottsdale on May 2, announcing statewide and national award winners as well as first-, second- and third-place Small Business Boost Contest winners.

鈥淏ig business may dominate the stock market, but it鈥檚 small-business and startups that keep our economy moving,鈥 said Lin Sue Cooney, director of community engagement at Hospice of the Valley, who served as mistress of ceremonies at the luncheon. 鈥淪mall businesses drive economic growth in Arizona, and today you鈥檙e going to see their impact. They give people the opportunity to achieve financial independence; they encourage innovation and create employment opportunities.鈥

Cooney said 979,412 people are employed by small businesses in Arizona. 鈥淭hat鈥檚 a pretty powerful number, don鈥檛 you think?鈥 she asked.

鈥淎s you have already heard today, we know small business is the backbone of our country, certainly the backbone of Arizona,鈥 said Michael Tilton, general manager of Blue Cross Blue Shield of Arizona.

鈥淥ver 95 percent of the employers in this state are small businesses, and for our organization 鈥 we鈥檝e been here serving Arizona for over 80 years now 鈥 we are fortunate to have always had a significant focus on small business, because we do understand that as times change and as stock markets come and go, small businesses are the ones that are always there,鈥 Tilton said.

Robert Blaney, Arizona district director for SBA, presented the 2019 awards. The week of May 5 is the 56th anniversary of National Small Business Week, and there is 鈥渘othing more American,鈥 Blaney said.

鈥淭his country was founded by risk-takers, and American entrepreneurship is what makes this country and what sets this country apart from other places,鈥 he said. 鈥淭o all the small businesses here, and to the 30 million other small businesses across the United States, thank you for what you do. You are what make us different; you are what make us great.鈥

The 2019 Arizona award went to two people: Jeffrey and Jennifer Herbert, co-founders and owners of in Prescott, established in 2012. The honey wine producers now offer more than 170 unique beverages in restaurants and stores in 37 states and 13 different countries, Blaney said.

鈥淛eff and Jennifer Herbert鈥檚 commitment to the mead beverage business does not stop in the tasting room,鈥 Blaney said. 鈥淭hey are founding members of the American Mead [Makers]; Jeff has served on the board. They鈥檙e shining examples of how small business improves the lives in our local economy and creates jobs to make a positive impact on Arizona.鈥

Veteran Advocate of the Year

The 2019 Arizona Veteran Advocate of the Year award went to Vern 鈥淩usty鈥 Findley, retired lieutenant general in the U.S. Air Force, who 鈥 in addition to working as a contract consultant in the defense industry 鈥攙olunteers as vice chairman of the board for S.E.E.4Vets, a nonprofit group that advocates for student veterans.

, which stands for Supporting Education and Employment for Veterans, collaborates with community colleges to shape and implement programs that improve student veteran retention and help connect them with career services.

鈥淭hey provide support, and they provide encouragement to veterans to complete their education and to help them navigate the job recruitment and hiring maze that everybody faces when they鈥檙e coming back to a civilian society from the military,鈥 Blaney said.

鈥淚n addition, S.E.E.4Vets provides employers with local venues to interview former service members as a way to help them connect and see the specific talents that men and women have when they鈥檝e served in our military,鈥 he said.

National Small Business Subcontractor of the Year

The 2019 National Small Business Subcontractor of the Year award was presented to Admiral Engineering and Manufacturing Company, Inc., a Phoenix-based machining company founded in 1966. Admiral Engineering creates specialized parts for businesses in the aerospace, defense, space, medical and technology industries.

鈥淚 looked at, and I saw the pieces they make; you would want 鈥榪uality without compromise鈥 鈥 trust me,鈥 Blaney said, referring to the company鈥檚 slogan. 鈥淲ith a modern, 17,000-square-foot facility conveniently located in North Phoenix, they have been creating tooling and sophisticated equipment in the machinery industry for over 48 years鈥 The company鈥檚 commitment to quality ensures that parts are consistently produced the first time.鈥

8(a) Graduate of the Year

Paul A. Smiley was named the Arizona 8(a) Graduate of the Year. The SBA 8(a) Business Development program is a federal initiative with an objective to award five percent of all federal contracting dollars to small, disadvantaged businesses each year.

鈥淲hat if every company鈥檚 number-one mission was to create a culture where employees, customers and business partners were treated with dignity, respect and human kindness?鈥 Blaney asked. 鈥淭hat鈥檚 the world that Paul Smiley created.鈥

Smiley, a U.S. Air Force veteran, is the president of, founded in 2007 and headquartered in Goodyear.

鈥淭hey are a service-disabled, veteran-owned business, and they are dedicated to delivering transformational training and technical solutions to a host of customers,鈥 Blaney said. 鈥淧aul鈥檚 company excels at hiring and placing qualified professionals who can hit the ground running and start delivering results on day one.鈥

Seo founded Evolue Skincare with 鈥渁 passionate, relentless spirit to heal the world from toxic skincare and to provide the best ingredients and results to everyone and anyone,鈥 according to the.

鈥淓volue鈥檚 mission is simple: focus on making high-performing skincare with the best ingredients,鈥 Blaney said. Seo鈥檚 library science degree allows her access to one of the largest library databases in the world 鈥 the University of California 鈥 where she can research ingredients and their effectiveness to make innovations in skin care, he said.

鈥淪mall businesses that diversify their product offerings, they greatly increase their prospects for growth,鈥 Blaney said. 鈥淭hose who enter international export markets can grow exponentially. You have to take into consideration that 95 percent of all consumers don鈥檛 live here鈥 they live somewhere else. The only way you can get it to them is to export it. And some people try to do that, and some people are very, very successful, and our award winner is one of those.鈥

Small Business Boost Contest

Larry Silver, Arizona director for Cox Business, took the stage toward the end of the luncheon to present the top-three winners of the 2019 Small Business Boost Contest, sponsored by Cox Business, 3TV, BNC National Bank and ASBA.

The contest has made a 鈥渂ig difference over the past few years,鈥 and past winners have noticed a measurable boost from the prize, which includes more than just money, Silver said.

鈥淟et鈥檚 talk about how we got here,鈥 he said. 鈥淭his road started about two months ago鈥 84 businesses entered. Of the 84 businesses, they had an opportunity to answer an online questionnaire. Those 84 businesses have a chance to win a $5,000 cash prize, courtesy of Cox Business; a $12,500 advertising schedule with 3TV, courtesy of Cox Business and BNC National Bank; an ASBA membership, including all the tools and resources 鈥 that could be priceless for many of us small business owners. That鈥檚 what they鈥檝e all been vying for.鈥

The businesses that applied were narrowed down to 12 by online votes from 6,700 members of the public, and those 12 each created videos explaining why they should win the prize.

A panel of judges then narrowed the 12 videos down to three finalists: Sibley鈥檚 West, a locally-sourced gift shop in Chandler; The Scookie Bar, a dessert food truck in the Phoenix area; and My Errand Ally, a personal shopping and errand service in the Valley.

John and Michelle Wolfe, co-owners of Sibley鈥檚 West 鈥 which they call the 鈥淐handler and Arizona Gift Shop鈥 鈥 took first prize, worth over $22,000 in cash and other support. John Wolfe said he and his wife wanted to thank the shop鈥檚 230 Arizona suppliers.

鈥淓verything in Sibley鈥檚 is from somebody in Arizona, and that might be an individual artist in Payson, it might be a small business in Prescott, it might be an organization in Tucson, but the idea is that they took a chance in having their items in our store eight years ago, and it鈥檚 been a terrific partnership,鈥 Wolfe said.

鈥淚鈥檇 also like to thank our staff,鈥 he said. 鈥淲e have eight employees, and they have really embraced the idea of taking the information about the individual artist and being able to share that with our guests who come in. They have lots of stories to tell.鈥

Wolfe also said that his wife, Michelle, acts as a sort of small-business consultant for many of their shop鈥檚 suppliers, who are often new in their businesses and working to develop pricing models and other aspects of their products and services.

Finally, Wolfe said he wanted to thank the shoppers and guests who have visited Sibley鈥檚 West in the eight and a half years since it opened.

鈥淚t鈥檚 a lot of people who are local, who come here and buy items, and they also buy them and take them with them if they鈥檙e traveling,鈥 he said. 鈥淲e also have visitors from 112 different countries who have signed our guest book.鈥

Laura Browder and Veanney Hurtado, co-owners of The Scookie Bar, took second place in the contest, which included a check from BNC National Bank for $1,500.

鈥淲e鈥檙e not just cookies and ice cream; it means so much more to us,鈥 Hurtado said. 鈥淲e started this company because, in 2014, we wanted to inspire the LGBT community in Arizona.鈥

Hurtado said her parents 鈥渃losed the door鈥 on her when she revealed her sexuality, but 鈥渨hen one door closes, another one opens.鈥 Hurtado and Browder met in 2014 and have been together ever since, founding The Scookie Bar soon after.

鈥淲e joke that Laura is the white scoop and I鈥檓 the brown cookie, and we met at a bar 鈥 so, together, it鈥檚 The Scookie Bar,鈥 Hurtado said, to genial applause.

Devoney Kelash, owner of My Errand Ally, won third place in the contest, which included a $1,000 check from BNC National Bank. Kelash, a Phoenix native, said she founded her business to help make people鈥檚 lives easier.

鈥淎s a small-business owner, marketing budgets are always little to non-existent, and so now we鈥檒l be able to reach so many more families and make their lives easier, so I greatly appreciate it,鈥 Kelash said.
