Arizona鈥檚 Cindy McCain, who has become a beacon worldwide for those living under the most difficult circumstances, received the 2020 Heritage Award from the Arizona 番茄社区 of Commerce & Industry Wednesday.

The award is the 番茄社区鈥檚 highest honor presented annually to individuals whose accomplishments and commitment impact not only Arizona but the world.

Recipients of the award are those who 鈥渉ave taken their personal success and used it to change the lives of others for the better,鈥 Glenn Hamer, president and CEO of the 番茄社区, said at the event that was sponsored by the McCains鈥 favorite NFL team, the Arizona Cardinals.

McCain, whose work includes creating worldwide awareness about human trafficking, joins the ranks of Arizona鈥檚 most influential citizens who have received the Heritage Award.

First awarded to Senator Barry Goldwater in 1991, fellow recipients include Alice Cooper, Rose Mofford, Mo Udall, Jerry Colangelo, Paul Fannin, and Frank Kush.

鈥淎s I look at the people on this award, I am in awe,鈥 McCain said. 鈥淕eorge W.P.  Hunt, Carl Hayden, Barry Goldwater and Sandra Day O鈥機onnor. I have the honor of knowing three of them. The grit, the grace, the big heart, the entrepreneurship in the history of Arizona is on this award and it鈥檚 a real honor to be included in their company.鈥

McCain said she鈥檚 also honored to be named along with her late husband, longtime Arizona U.S. Congressman John McCain, who died of glioblastoma, a form of brain cancer, in 2018.

Early contributions to the less fortunate

McCain, who has lived all her life in Arizona, was raised as the daughter of one of the most successful men in America. But as a young woman, she had no interest in jet-setting, she said.

Instead, she opted to fly to the far reaches of the 鈥渨orst areas of the world鈥 to help those trapped in poverty, suffering from life threatening disfigurements, or held hostage in human trafficking rings. She was astounded by the atrocities she discovered.

鈥淭he lack of care and the lack of respect for women around the world is mind boggling and it really makes me mad,鈥 said McCain, who wishes more people would make small contributions to help devastated communities in the U.S. and abroad.

She has traveled to places like Rwanda, the East Congo and Bangladesh, teh country where she adopted her daughter Bridget, whose severe cleft palate was a threat to her life. Nursing Bridget through multiple surgeries motivated McCain to work with Operation Smile. The charity provides free facial surgeries for cleft palates, cleft lips and other malformations.

Reaching out to war-torn and disaster areas

In 1988, McCain founded the American Voluntary Medical Team to send medical personnel to disaster-stricken and war-torn developing world countries.

She has traveled the world to help with the removal of landmines, sent medical supplies to devastated communities, promoted early childhood brain development, and advocated for injured veterans through her involvement with charities like the Eastern Congo Initiative, CARE, HALO Trust, Project C.U.R.E., Too Small to Fail, and Warriors and Quiet Waters.

Putting an end to human trafficking

McCain has also brought great attention in Arizona, the nation and the world to the plight of women and children who are victims of human trafficking.

She co-chairs Governor Doug Ducey鈥檚 Arizona Human Trafficking and chairs the Human Trafficking Advisory Council for the McCain Institute for International Leadership. Through her work, new laws have been passed and community initiatives jump started.

Bringing civility to politics and the internet

McCain also is carrying on her husband鈥檚 wish to bring back civil discourse to politics and the internet through the McCain Institute.

The was founded in 2012 with Arizona State University to “advance leadership based on security, economic opportunity, freedom, and human dignity, in the United States and around the world.”

鈥淭here鈥檚 more that unites us than divides us and we should respect our common heritage,鈥 she said.

Chair of one of nation鈥檚 largest Anheuser-Busch distributors

McCain also is an Arizona businesswoman. Her parents, Marguerite and Jim Hensley, began to grow the Hensley brand when they first brought cold beer to the state in the 1950s.

Today, she is chair of her late father鈥檚 enterprise, the Hensley Beverage Company, one of the nation鈥檚 largest distributors of Anheuser-Busch.

Raised under her wing

During the ceremony Wednesday, several notable Arizonans and close friends of the McCains talked about her lifelong philanthropy: Governor Doug Ducey, Arizona Cardinals owner and team president Michael Bidwill, Cardinals wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald, Hensley CEO Bob Delgado, and Richard Adkerson, CEO of Freeport McMoRan.

Several spoke about her being a role model to her and Sen. McCain鈥檚 seven children. Her son Jack spoke about what it was like to be raised under her wing.

鈥淲hen I was about 13, she essentially said, 鈥業t’s time to work.鈥 So she had me come to Hensley Company and my first job was delivering the mail, being a gofer,鈥 Jack McCain said. 鈥淎nd then a few years later, I went to work in the garage.

鈥淥f all the jobs I鈥檝e had — whether it鈥檚 been in the military, elsewhere, in combat — that was by far the worst because I had to sand and strip food trucks outside in the Arizona summer. I think she viewed that as a learning experience and she also made sure I was paid the absolute minimum possible.

鈥淪o it was quite a learning experience. One that sticks out.鈥

The Arizona Cardinals announced a new stadium deal with State Farm. An 18-year naming rights agreement will change the name of the Glendale stadium from University of Phoenix Stadium to State Farm Stadium.

Previously, the University of Phoenix paid the Arizona Cardinals $7.7 million annually for the naming rights to the stadium. The contract was initially supposed to run until 2026, but the university informed the Cardinals that it wanted to end the contract early. Neither State Farm nor the Cardinals revealed the financial details of the deal, but it is expected to range between $200 and $400 million. 聽

Arizona Cardinals President Michael Bidwill expressed his excitement for the partnership. 鈥淲e were intent on finding a relationship that was an ideal fit with our organization and this community in terms of values, priorities and culture,鈥 Bidwill stated. 鈥淲ith State Farm, we absolutely did that. While this is a comprehensive marketing agreement, there will be a major focus on community programs that will have a positive impact across our state. State Farm is one of the most-respected and recognizable brands in the world and Phoenix is fortunate to be one of its three hub markets.鈥

State Farm has 聽a strong presence in Arizona with one of its three regional offices located in Tempe. The company employs roughly 7,000 people in the state, and employees have contributed more than two million hours of community service across the valley.

Glendale City Manager Kevin Phelps explains that State Farm already had ties to Glendale. 鈥淪tate Farm directly supports communities across the country through their Good Neighbor Citizenship grants program,鈥 Phelps said. 鈥淭he city of Glendale has been the direct recipient of these grants over the last few years, including a recent Police Department grant to promote our 鈥業t Can Wait鈥 campaign to promote safer teen driving habits and discourage use of cell phones while driving.鈥

Phelps notes the new partnership will bring more exposure to the city of Glendale and draw more tourism to the city. The tourism industry supports over 180,000 jobs and generates over $3 billion in sales tax revenue, and this new naming deal will only increase those figures. Phelps said, 鈥淛ust in the media coverage alone of the announcement of State Farm taking over naming rights of the stadium, Glendale, Arizona was mentioned and profiled over and over.鈥
